Dealing with Failure

Dealing with Failure

Failure is not always a bad thing!

Failure can crop up in every area of our life. Failure can be incredibly dis-empowering and stressful. But is failure such a bad thing?

Well, it depends on our perspective. History has revealed that often great success follows much failure. One great example is Thomas A. Edison - who invented the light-bulb who after many failed attempts to create a working light bulb said “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work”.

In this video we look at how people typically react to failure and the effects of this.

We then look a four simple strategies to manage failure in an empowering way.

Moving from FEAR to FREEDOM!

Moving from FEAR to FREEDOM!

Hi,

MOVING FROM FEAR TO FREEDOM!

In this blog I wanted to provide you with an update on my Coaching business and what I plan to do next. I am excited to confirm that I am now providing Business and Life Coaching on a full time basis. This has been a dream of mine for many years and I am so happy this this dream has finally come true! I now have more time to carry-out research, create more blogs and of course provide coaching sessions to my clients.

It’s funny sometimes how life conspires to move you in a particular direction! Following a chain of events running over many years the words “FEAR” and “FREEDOM” kept popping into my head. I have had a lot of experience of fear - I have experienced it myself, my coaching clients have experienced it as have my business contacts and my friends.

It was as though these experiences were telling me - “Kev, this is your focus!”.

This fear tends to show up as anxiety or stress and can be an incredibly strong emotion that can shut you down and prevent you from being resourceful.

The root cause of the fear (anxiety/stress) can be from many areas of your life:

  • your business
  • your job
  • your relationships
  • your health
  • your money (...or the lack of it!)

...to name just a few!

What ever the root cause the end result can be the same, below are just a hand-full of the symptoms of fear:

  • you can feel shut down
  • lack resourcefulness to resolve a problem
  • you can only see a negative outcome
  • you struggle to get a good night’s sleep
  • fear can manifest itself physically making you feel terrible!

Moving forward the focus of my Coaching business will be to help people (either business clients or life coaching clients) who are struggling with fear (anxiety or stress) and help them get their freedom!

I also will be releasing a series of blogs based upon the theme of fear and provide ways you can move yourself away from fear and move towards your freedom!

10 Ways to get a GREAT NIGHT’S SLEEP!

In this first video I address one of the symptoms I mention above - “struggling to get a good night’s sleep”.

Sleep is a vital component of having good mental and physical health. I have struggled for a number of years to get a restful sleep and I know the impact of poor quality sleep and also not getting enough sleep. Many people struggle to sleep well because of their anxiety or stress. Following my own experience and research I share 10 ways that you can get a great night’s sleep - and take a step closer to your freedom! I hope you enjoy it!

Kev’s BLOG Tip - “Super Brain!”

I am currently on a 30 day programme called “Super Brain”. This is a Mind Valley programme and is run by Jim Kwik who is known for his incredible memory and his ability to remember the names of 100 people he meets at his seminars (in order!). The Power of Learning…The Power of GROWTH!

The Power of Learning…The Power of GROWTH!

Hi,

The power of learning…the power of GROWTH!

It occurred to me recently following a coaching session with a client, the importance of investing time in yourself to learn and grow. One of the main reasons we are on this planet to grow - we learn from others, we learn from our experiences and of course we learn from our mistakes. For some people learning is easy. If they have a strong need to grow as an individual the drive is already there and it’s easy for them to choose a book to read, attend a course or watch a video.

But what if you are struggling to start learning more?

Well, I believe there’s a reason for why we do or don’t do something. If someone is struggling to get started, there could be a number of reasons. One of the main ones could be procrastination…

Here is Wikipedia’s definition of Procrastination:

“Procrastination is defined as the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. It could be further stated as a habitual/intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite its negative consequences.”

If we are procrastinating about learning we are probably saying to ourselves “I really should learn how to…” or “I really should study more…”

The “should” in our mind-set typically does not carry a high level of importance or urgency.

So how do we break through this barrier that is holding us back?

By the changing the “should” into an absolute “must!”. For example by changing “I should learn how to improve my relationships” to “I MUST learn how to improve my relationships”.

Here are 5 steps to help you make the shift towards making it a MUST to learn and grow:

1. Where do you want to grow? - Ask yourself “In which area of my life do I need to improve?” you could also ask yourself “Which area of my life is the most painful?!” - this could be my career, my business, my health, my relationships, my finances, my spirituality and so on…

2. Go deeper? - Once you have picked the area - go deeper and find something in that area that excites you? Something really “juicy” - that if you achieved it would make you feel incredible. For example you may want to improve your finances; and if you learnt how to be financially free (so that you would never have to work again - if you did’nt want to!) you would feel amazing!

3. Clarify it, write it down and pin it up! - what is the specific RESULT you want? - Write this down clearly - including when you want it. Then write down WHY you want it - write down which empowering emotions you will feel when you master the area of your life that you want to learn about. How will this impact your life and those close to you?

For example:

RESULT? - “I want to create financial freedom for myself and my family - I want to have financial freedom in X years.”

WHY? - “I MUST achieve this so that I can have more freedom to do what I want in my life - I will be able spend more time with my family. I will be able to give more to others. I will feel incredibly happy by achieving this.”

Then pin this up on a mirror or place it on your desk so you can see it every day - this will help remind you how important this is to you.

4. Who knows how to do this? - One thing for sure is that somebody somewhere has achieved what you would like to achieve. It’s also probable that they have written a book about it. So, spend sometime researching this: Do an internet search on the result you want to achieve. Do they have a book? Do they have a web-site? or do they have a video you can watch? Do you know someone who has already achieved result? If so, go and talk to them - buy them a coffee - they’ll probably enjoy telling you about how they did it and how it made them feel.

5. Give it time and enjoy it - scheduling time daily to learn by reading a book or watching a video or listening to an audio-book is the key. The previous steps will help build your energy and excitement (if you have really focused on making this a MUST to do). If you have done this then scheduling it becomes easy - because you will WANT to do it! It will be fun and you will enjoy it.

If you start to slip back and find yourself putting off the learning then read the note you pinned up or repeat the steps.

As you master one area of your life - repeat the steps and pick the next area of your life that you would like to learn how to master.

Kev’s BLOG Tip - Love your work, Love your life:

Staying with the theme of learning, I have just finished reading a fabulous book called “FREE! Love your work, Love your life” by Chris Barez-Brown. The book helps you to step back, look at your career and the work you do and puts it into perspective within your life. It helps you to learn more and appreciate what is important to you in your life and work. In the book Chris shows you how you can love your work and life so that you can feel free. It’s a very easy book to read and you can read it start to finish or jump from one section to another.

The Journey of Self-discovery

The Journey of Self-discovery

Hi,

The Journey of Self-discovery

In this blog I wanted to talk about the importance of self discovery. I believe we are each here on this planet for a reason. There is a special purpose for each of us. That purpose can sometimes be difficult for us to discover. However, through personal experience I can say you’ll find your purpose in your heart. It’s the place where you can be vulnerable and be open. To truly open your heart is a special and a magical experience. To connect with yourself at the deepest level is where love is, and where you will discover the answers to the questions you have. You can then find your purpose and explore why you are here.

I wish I had discovered this years ago! But then again maybe I knew it and chose to ignore it! Duh!

So how can you connect with yourself and your heart? How can you tap into the energy within?

I am sure there are many ways however, one exercise that I find helpful is to place both hands on your heart, close your eyes, breathe deeply and be truly grateful. Be grateful for your life, the people in it, the wonderful experiences you have, the experiences that are yet to happen and the person you are about to become. If you have any unanswered questions then ask yourself and wait for the response (the response may come to you later in the day).

I want to share this incredible exercise from Tony Robbins called “Heart Breathing” it will take you on a journey where you will have an opportunity to connect with yourself….magic!...enjoy! Click here: HEART BREATHING EXERCISE or in the video shown below.

The Power of Vulnerability

Keeping with the theme of vulnerability I wanted to share this inspiring TED talk from Researcher Brene Brown who during a research project initially focused on human connection went on a journey of self-discovery and discovered the power of vulnerability. I hope you enjoy this as much I did. CLICK HERE for the Brene Brown - TED Talk.

Kev’s BLOG Tip - Productivity:

This is a new feature that will appear in my blogs from now on. These are tips where I share something that has either helped me or my clients to make an improvement in life. In this blog I wanted to share a productivity tip. I have always liked to read books but have sometimes struggled to get the time I wanted to read and those books I bought sat on the shelf gathering dust! A few years ago I discovered AUDIBLE (I am sure there are other platforms by the way). Using Audible I was able to download audio books and listen to them on the move…in my car…on the train or just walking. I have since listened to over 20 books (some three times!). My learning progress has gone through the roof! Why not give it a go?!

The Power of Focus

The Power of Focus

Hi,

I hope you are well!

The Power of Focus:

Over the last few months one of the most powerful concepts I have witnessed during coaching sessions with my clients is the power of FOCUS. It is incredible how a difficult problem can be resolved when you focus on the solution. One option of course is to focus on the problem, however I recommend spending little time on this! Once you know what the problem is - focus on the solution! In fact, by brain-storming ideas to resolve the problem will provide you with a number of different options to try. This is the key to a winning strategy. If the solution fails - try again, if that fails - try again…and so on! I like the following quote - “Keep trying - failures increase the probability of success.” - Ken Poirot.

Anthony Robbins Podcast: Limiting Beliefs

Following with the theme of focus, I also wanted to share with you a powerful Podcast from Anthony Robbins. It’s a recording of a recent Business Mastery event where Tony helps a business owner to move beyond her limiting beliefs about expanding her business and finding her niche. Tony then goes on to help her develop a focused marketing strategy and clearly define her next steps. What was most striking to me was how the mind-set of the business leader can make or break the business. Specifically with limiting beliefs - if we believe we can or cannot do something we are right!

I hope you enjoy this!

6 Steps to help resolve any challenge you face!

6 Steps to help resolve any challenge you face!

Six simple steps to help resolve any challenge you face…

We all experience challenges as we move through life. Sometimes it can seem that life is against us.

In this article, we explore the truth about the challenges we face, their meaning and discover 6 simple steps we can take to quickly decide what to do and to turn the challenge into an opportunity.

Wow! Sometimes doesn’t it feel like it’s one thing after another! Certainly, in my life there have been many times where I would be faced with a huge challenge out of the blue – I would look at it as a major problem. I would become stressed over it – I would sometimes feel like I was slowing down as the problem felt heavy. I would try to ignore it however the
longer I ignored it the heavier it felt! Then once I figured a way to try and resolve the problem, what happened? Another one showed up! Sometime two at the same time! I would think why me?!

Does this sound familiar? Well, stick with me here – try the following steps to breakthrough your challenge and move forward – with a smile on your face!

Step 1 – Problem or challenge?

Just naming the situation as a problem can feel dis-empowering. Acknowledge that this is a challenge and not a problem. In sport, we don’t have problems – we have challenges. A challenge can be fun! Acknowledge that this challenge is here for a reason. This is an opportunity for you to grow. Ask yourself what does this challenge really mean? How will I feel once I resolve this challenge?

Step 2 – A different perspective

Who do you know who could easily resolve this? This could be someone you know, somebody famous (an actor/actress) – or even a fictitious character – Indiana Jones, Lara Croft or even Austin Powers! Now, imagine you are now that person - How would you look at the problem? What would you say to yourself? How would you think?

Step 3 – A problem shared is a problem halved (sorry I mean challenge!)

If you feel comfortable, discuss the challenge with a close friend. It can be really helpful to get their opinion on the challenge and understand how they would address it. Alternatively, write the challenge down – this can help articulate it in more detail.

Step 4 – Let’s get moving!

Now, stay with me here – I know it will sound odd – but, please, please do the following:

1. Stand up. Shake your arms and legs for a few moments. Stand tall.

2. Close your eyes, open your arms out wide and spread your fingers and take three slow, deep breaths.

3. Now, open your eyes.

You should feel relaxed and more empowered – if not – then put some fast rock music on and dance like crazy for 5 minutes – and repeat this step - YES – I’m serious! It is critical to change your state before we move on.

Step 5 – Let’s start writing!

Write down answers to the following questions:

1. How will I grow by resolving this challenge?

2. How will I feel once I resolve this challenge?

3. What is great about this challenge?

Now, in this empowered state write down what options you can see to resolve the challenge. Just keep writing, don’t over think it, just write, whatever comes into your mind.

Looking at the options and taking your time circle the option you would like to move ahead with – it can help by going with your gut instinct.

Step 6 – Take action!

Well done! Now the easy part! Carry-out the action you would like to move ahead with. Repeating step 4 just before you carry out the action really helps to give you energy to move ahead with the action!

Don’t worry if you do not get the desired result the first time – just notice what is working and what is not working. Take a look at the other options you listed in step 5 to see if there is a more appropriate action. Repeat steps 1 – 6 as required.

So, as we wrap up here what have we learned?

Mindset is the key – facing a challenge with a dis-empowered mind-set will not help you. Changing your stage as described in step 4 will shift you into an empowered state with a strong mind-set, so that you are prepared to face the challenge.

Use a different perspective – look around you - you have friends and family that can support you and can help you brain-storm options for you to resolve the challenge.

Remember you are resourceful – you have resolved challenges in the past and you WILL resolve this one. You’ve already done incredible things in your life. This challenge is easy for you to fix!

So, stand tall and go get em! – realise you are special! Realise you are here for a reason. Life is really a game – full of challenges and opportunities. As you resolve each challenge you learn and grow and can use these experiences to help others.

TESTIMONIALS FROM SOME OF MY MOST RECENT CLIENTS

The reason I decided to look for a coach was to become unstuck in my career, within one session I gained the confidence to apply for a new job and got it! I needed clarity on what I wanted in my working life which inevitably with Kevin’s coaching style bumped into other areas of my life that needed fine tuning. I seemed to have a gap between the real me and the outdated story I was telling myself. With Kevin’s help I was able to realise I didn’t need to be more, less, better or worse, that I was resourceful already, can use my intuition to good effect and that it was OK being me. Kevin’s relaxed style made it easy for me to move forward and I left each session feeling positive. I would thoroughly recommend giving Coaching a go.

I began my sessions with Kevin to address issues I knew I had around anxiety in my professional and personal life. I could see how the anxiety was limiting me and wanted to change, to not be restricted by my emotions. My self-esteem was very low so I was finding it difficult to talk publicly, to be confident in my work and to have the drive to take action in my life. In our sessions we’ve worked a lot on my anxiety. He’s helped me break things down and has given me the tools I needed to help me manage my own mind and overcome the obstacles that I faced. The difference I’ve noticed in myself since starting with Kevin has been immeasurable. I’ve grown in confidence and I’ve noticed my anxiety is not restricting me as much in my daily life, I’m a much happier person. I would recommend Kevin to anyone who’s feeling stuck in their life, who want to understand their own minds better and overcome emotional barriers. His approach allows you to find your own solutions by giving you the tools you need, this method has meant that I’ve been able to go away form our sessions and work on other problems in my own time, such a valuable skill.

I found Kevin an incredibly talented as a coach. From the first session I had with him, I could tell the deep knowledge and passion he has toward helping his clients. His uplifting skills and positive energy helped me to open up in many aspects of my life and business path. I enjoyed his new approach that he used in every coaching session. You will be thinking that he is done with you, then he'll surprise you about a challenge that will stretch your brain in many ways. Kevin is a coach by nature, and by many other natural traits that he demonstrates during his sessions. I would highly recommend Kevin as both a career and personal coach. In fact his broad experience in both life and business is what makes him a wonderful coach and a human being to work with.

I was a bit sceptical when I started out on this experience with Kev but now I am so pleased I did. He managed to bring out the business skills I had forgotten I had and gave me the confidence to tackle some issues I knew I had to address but had put off. Our conversations allow me to bounce off ideas that I couldn’t digest during the normal working day and gave me food for thought. After each session I felt refreshed and ready to take on whatever was thrown at me. He has a knack of asking questions that he knows you have the answers to if you dig deep enough and encourages you to find them and to believe in yourself.

I hired Kevin as my Business Coach while I was starting my new business and also going through a divorce. Kevin's compassionate nature and solution-focused approach helped me move forward with my business while experiencing a great deal of personal transition. Kevin allowed me to discover clarity and focus while providing me with excellent accountability through our coaching together.
Carla Kerner
Business Owner, Seattle, U.S.
Kevin was fully committed to me as his client, this projected an extraordinary positive energy in the sessions which created a trustful and empowering environment to enable me to find my path for my goals. During my journey of coaching with Kevin I was in one of those “life crash moments”, he helped me to understand who I am and what I want, which has been an extraordinary remedy to bring me peace and happiness. Thank you, Kevin!

During my sessions with Kevin, he was able to coach me to a much sharper focus on my issues. In a very short time I gained a deeper insight, new learning and a clear way forward. The sessions were delightfully surprising, effective and professionally delivered.

Over the last 6 months Kevin has worked with me as my Executive Coach, during this time he has coached me through a number of key areas. As a coach, he is very calm, knowledgeable and most importantly insightful, he has a great ability to ask the right question or use the right intervention just at the right moment. Working with Kevin has been a very reinforcing and positive experience, where he has afforded me the time and space to allow me to work through the areas I brought to each session in a creative and supportive manner. Kevin is a very natural Coach and I would highly recommend him.
Alan Cheung
Group SHE Operations and Behavioural Management Director, Costain Group plc
Being coached by Kev has given me the opportunity to unashamedly think just about myself and the future and to get clarity about my own business development without feeling time-pressured. It’s lonely at the top: I don’t have anyone to talk to about decisions affecting my businesses. No-one should be an island. I was an island before Kev. Coaching is unlocking my blocks. Having the experience of someone else who is in business and speaking through solutions has been very beneficial to me. Coming up with a list of achievable goals to deliver and knowing you need to deliver them is what I wanted out of the coach - and is what I am getting.
